CannaWellness: CBD in the United Kingdom – An Exclusive Interview
Firstly, could you tell us about yourself and your business?
I’m Catherine Wilson the Managing Director of CannaWellness Ltd. We are based in Brighton and import a range of high quality CBD based oils from the US and soon will offer also a CBD cream which is made in the EU.
What made you want to start selling CBD products?
I came to learn about CBD by chance. A very good friend of mine wanted to import high quality CBD oil from the US and asked me for help as I have relevant experience in compliance and shipping documentation. She decided not to get involved herself and suggested maybe I would be interested to go ahead independently. I started researching CBD in depth including the competitive landscape here in the UK for CBD oils. The power of using good quality CBD oil was very evident from the reviews I saw of clients who had taken the products and there seemed a gap in the market for a high quality oil and cream. This eventually led to setting up CannaTherapy which very recently has been re-branded as CannaWell.
Who are your products for?
CBD is hemp derived and suitable for everyone. Whether you are healthy and simply want to take a CBD supplement for general wellness or, you have physical or stress related problems, anecdotal evidence suggests CBD makes a huge difference to people in so many ways.
Is it a general ‘health supplement’ type product or does it have specific uses?
CBD is classified as a food supplement. In accordance with Nutritional and Health Claims Guidance all we can say is that our products are food supplements, not medication, they are not intended to treat, prevent, cure, or diagnose any disease.
Why should somebody buy your products?
If you do any research or read online the many articles that are publicly available it becomes self apparent why people should buy it. In essence CBD oil helps regulate every system in our bodies – nervous/digestive/reproductive/immunological/endocrine system. They are essential for maintaining the body’s internal health and stability. Most people don’t know much, if anything, about the endocannaboid system.
Particularly where medical cannabis is available, why buy a CBD product?
CBD oil is a cannabis oil (whether derived from marijuana or industrial hemp, as the word cannabis is the latin genus name for both) that has significant amounts of cannabidiol (CBD) contained within it.
Our CBD oils are derived from industrial hemp, so they could be considered CBD-rich hemp oil, hemp derived CBD oil, or CBD-rich cannabis oil. Again, cannabis doesn’t mean marijuana, but is the genus name, and generally umbrella term which all forms of marijuana and hemp fall under.
CannaWell CBD oils contain over 80 different phyto-cannabinoids, most notably cannabidiol (CBD), CBC, CBG, CBN and probably others yet to be adequately identified. The CBD oil is extracted through a high pressured, supercritical CO2 extraction of an industrial hemp variet of Cannabis sativa. All our hemp-CBD extract and final products are tested by a third party laboratory for Cannabinoid Potency, Heavy Metals, Bacterial and Microbials, Mycotoxins (Fungal) and Pesticides.
Is CBD from Hemp as beneficial as CBD from marijuana?
The short answer is yes. CBD is CBD, whether from marijuana or hemp. Most marijuana has a very low cannabidiol profile, so most of the time hemp would be much more preferable option regarding CBD potency because it naturally has such a high amount of it. If you want CBD, our hemp CBD oil would be the preferable choice.
Do you have any case studies/patient stories you can share with me?
We have several case studies, still ongoing and many stories of those that use it, but I can’t share this information with you for publication as it could be seen as a health claim and we have to comply with the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulations.
What are your plans for the future?
We have only started trading in 2015 and are very pleased with our start so far. In the future, we hope to see CannaWell products on shelves throughout the UK with customer awareness coming to a point that CBD is accepted and known as a great food supplement that supports, and aids health and well being.
How do you plan on expanding the business, if indeed you want to?
We need to raise the awareness of CBD and take away the stigma associated with anything to do with the ‘cannabis’ plant. We are building an Ambassador and Affiliate network as two key ways of expanding the business. It is hoped that these Ambassadors, who are mostly already clients and are responsible for a geographical region, can help spread the word about how CBD has helped them. Our Affiliate network should help endorse what we are doing and drive business to our online website from trusted partners.
Finally, what are your thoughts on medical cannabis in a more general sense?
I admire and respect the many people who diligently seek to provide valuable information and campaign about medicinal cannabis, knowing that it is currently illegal in the UK. We all follow what is happening in the US and how medicinal cannabis gains momentum as an alternative to traditional treatment methods and how it is helping so many people.
Is CBD enough on its own?
That’s a difficult question to answer as we are at the start of this journey and much research is still ongoing. At this stage of our understanding I would say yes it is.
